How to pay by credit card?

You can pay with a credit card in a variety of ways. There is a difference between online payments and payments in a physical store.

These days, the newest cards have a chip, just like bank cards. As a result, you have to sign less and less. So it used to be in a hotel, for example, or in a restaurant.

Payment in shops and restaurants

You insert your credit card into the payment system and enter your PIN. It works just like your bank card, but your credit card has its own PIN.

The magnetic strip on the back of your card is almost never used. The chip is safer: it cannot be copied.

The amount you pay will be debited from your account at the end of the month or the beginning of the next month. Payment in online stores

You don't need your chip. You need the card number on the front of the card. It has 13 to 16 digits.

If you are ordering online, you also enter the expiration date of the card. You can also find it in front; for example, it looks like 12/21. This means that you can use the card until December 2021.

You then have a credit card verification value - CVV for short - or a verification code. Online merchants often ask for this code to verify that it's your card. You may need to re-verify the purchase using your bank's card reader or mobile app.

Setting a password

If you wish, you can protect your online payments with a password. Payments become even more secure; we strongly recommend that you request or add a password.

Mastercard calls this password Mastercard Securecode. With Visa, it's verified by Visa.

Avoid unknown online stores

More and more fake stores are popping up. So, when ordering items online, stick to sites that you (well) know. Reputable online stores can't afford abuse and treat your information with care, it's safer that way.

It's better not to withdraw money

You can also pay with a credit card indirectly: by withdrawing money from the machine, just like with your bank card. You will then need your PIN again.

We advise against withdrawing money from a credit card: you usually pay a percentage of the amount you withdraw, and this quickly amounts to 5 to 6 euros.
