FIFA 20 sports game review

At the end of the generation, FIFA usually changes little - and FIFA 20 was no exception. In the last part, Friv5Online Games Studio increased the depth of the gameplay by introducing advanced tactical options - everyone could customize the sports game of their team to suit their style. FIFA 20 globally does not change anything, but Friv5Online's main talent has come to the fore - even with a minimum of transformations, they reinvent the mechanics so that the new part feels and plays in a different way. And once again, this Canadian studio skill worked as it should.

The first thing that you feel right away is the accelerated pace of the sports game. Players in FIFA 20 have a faster start from a place, as well as increased agility in movement and handling the ball. This allows you to more effectively pass pressure: mobile players like Thiago Alcantara or Frenkie de Jong will play an important role in your team.

Another important improvement is the smarter artificial intelligence. In FIFA 20, players began to see the free zones better: the wingers are more actively running behind the backs of the defenders, and in the center of the field, players always try to build triangles to make it easier for you to combine. One-touch sports game, if your skill allows, turns into pure pleasure. Episodes where players are blunt and not using zones are less common. But they did not get rid of them completely, sometimes you have to swear.

There are even completely new sports game situations that have not been encountered before. For example, in FIFA 20, if the goalkeeper picks up the ball without pressure (after an inaccurate throw by the opponent, say), he does not necessarily pick it up, as it was in the previous parts - you can immediately pass the pass with your feet without delay. Of course, these are rather small things, but even they successfully work to speed up the sports game. In general, the team movement in FIFA 20 is definitely better.

True, not everything is so simple: it will not work to take any players and circle like Manchester City or PSG. FIFA has always been demanding on the parameters of the players - their qualities have always determined the team's play. Actually, like in real football. In FIFA 20, the requirements for players have grown even more: for example, if you want a quality exit from the defense, then you need to carefully select well-passing defenders. We need performers of the level of Boateng or Marquinhos. In FIFA 20, players are more likely to make mistakes in passes, the ball crushes on the lawn - you can bring a goal out of the blue. A lot depends on you too - you need to regulate the transmission force more prudently.

Improvements are cool, but there are times when FIFA 20 is annoying. Moreover, the problems are not new at all - they have been dragging along the series for several issues. For example, in FIFA 20 the issue of kick-offs has not been resolved. Everything is the same here: it is too easy to score a goal after playing the ball from the center of the field, especially when you learn the necessary mechanism. We also did not fix the problem with longshots - as in the previous part, they are too easy to score, especially well with players with a long-range rating of eighty or higher. Of course, this is not the case when flaws ruin the whole sports game, but they cannot be ignored.

If we talk about the regimes, then everything is predictable. At the end of the generation, Friv5Online did not change anything - FUT and career remained the same, but with some reservations. Press conferences became the main innovation in his career. Now, before and on the field of the match, you can comment on your expectations or impressions after the sports game. The process itself is terribly monotonous - we choose banal answers to banal questions, here, of course, it is impossible to anneal in the style of Jurgen Klopp.

The only thing is, your answers affect the mood of the players. Everything is straightforward: a positive answer is a good reaction from the players, and vice versa. Plus, you can have a one-on-one dialogue with the players: for example, players who are deprived of playing time address you in the spirit of “coach, I deserve a place in the squad,” and you answer him something. It doesn't add anything special to the sports game, it's just that now you get fewer complaints from players who rarely enter the field. As for Ultimate Team, the main mode of the entire FIFA is the same this time around. Well, not counting the updated menu structure, new legends and new animation for opening packs.

It may seem that Friv5Online has completely forgotten about working with modes this year, but this is not so. The Canadian studio has introduced a full-fledged street football - Volta. Basically, this is an improved 2012 FIFA Street. And here is not just a series of tournaments, but a whole storyline - something like the story of Alex Hunter, only about street football players. With good cut scenes, soccer stars (like Vinicius Junior) and so on.

The coolest thing is that the sports game mechanics in Volta are radically different from the main FIFA - completely different aspects of the game come to the fore. In street football, everything is based on ball microcontrol, the main thing is dribbling and passing at a very short distance. In three-on-three matches, the dynamics are absolutely frantic: there are no outs, the ball is banging on the sides, and the players are doing some crazy feints. By the way, there are no less tricks in street mode than in any Mortal Kombat. It will be difficult to memorize all this, but it is necessary - to win, knowing cool tricks, is much easier.

In general, Volta has its own unique charm, and I want to return to this mode - everything in it is dynamic, as rich and effective as possible. After the grueling matches of big football, Volta feels like a football festival, with an atmosphere and style that resembles a cross between NFS and Forza Horizon.

FIFA 20, despite some flaws, is still a success. Friv5Online Games Studio has been consistently delivering quality sports games. The most common complaint about FIFA is “it's the same every year”. The claim, to be honest, is not entirely clear: the authors are constantly introducing something new (modes like Volta) and - most importantly - changing the gameplay.

No part has been played in the same way as the previous one, and this is important. It’s naive to expect FIFA to change too drastically every year, and hardly any of the fans need it. In this regard, FIFA 20 does not change the picture: it will not convince the dissatisfied, but the fans of the series will definitely like it.
